Fatty Foods You Should Avoid

What we eat has a major impact on our body. Not only does it affect our weight, it can be a leading factor in major health problems. Fatty foods affect our lives in two ways. When you eat the right fatty foods, your body has the balance it needs to lose weight the healthy way. When you eat the wrong fatty foods, you set yourself up for serious health risks. Full-fat yogurts, oils, and eggs are some foods that have healthy fats. We can't cut fat completely out of our diets because we need it to survive. But, we need to make sure we are consuming the right fats daily. So, what fatty foods should you avoid?

Fried Potatoes

That's right. We're talking about French fries and potato chips. While their main ingredient of whole potatoes is healthy and filling, this variation is not. French fries and potato chips are high in calories and they are designed to fit the saying, "bet you can't eat just one!" Not only are they unhealthy, they have been linked to an increase in weight gain. So, although it doesn't sound as tasty, it's best to stick to plain, boiled potatoes here. French fries and potato chips are unhealthy and fattening.

Sugary Drinks

Soda, fruit drinks, even sports drinks are sugar-sweetened beverages that make up one of the unhealthiest food categories on the planet. Regular consumption of sugary drinks is linked to weight gain and can have other negative effects of your body. It's not just about the calories you are consuming, either. The problem with sugary drinks is that our bodies don't register them as food. So, liquid sugar calories add up in our system but don't add to our fullness. Therefore, they are referred to as empty calories. If weight loss is your goal, try giving up soda and sugar drinks and notice the impact this has on your weight.

White Carbs

White carbs are highly refined and often contain a lot of added sugar. Let's start with white bread. This food is high on the glycemic index and can lead to a spike in your blood sugar levels. This increases your risk of weight gain and obesity. Pastries, cookies, and cakes can be a problem too. Refined flour also has added sugar. Another problem with these foods is that they are not satisfying. So, while you are consuming a decent number of calories when you eat them, you will also likely become hungry shortly after. Avoid overeating and choose whole grain options instead.


Candy is packed with sugar, added oils, and refined flours. Candy bars have a high number of calories and a low number of nutrients. And, all this is packed in a small piece of food. The problem with candy bars today is that they are strategically placed throughout stores to catch your eye. Especially when people are in a hurry, the temptation to impulsively grab something to fill your stomach can be a major mistake. If you are looking for a small snack, choose a piece of fruit or a handful of nuts instead. Your body, and your belly, will thank you.


Alcohol is a big part of our society. Adults use it to wind down at the end of the day, to socialize with family and friends, and even to attract people to events. The problem with alcohol is that it provides more calories than carbs. And, heavy drinking is associated with increase weight gain. But, the type of alcohol matters on this subject. Beer can cause weight gain, but studies show that drinking wine in moderation can be helpful to the body because of its antioxidants. So, if you are trying to lose weight you might consider reducing your alcohol consumption. But, changing what you drink can help as well.

Improving your weight is a healthy way to reduce the risk of chronic disease and feel better overall. Avoid these fatty foods to reduce your risk of gaining weight.
